Water Resources Research from Kyrgyzstan Presented at the AGU Conference in the United States
December 23, 2025

Associate Professor of the Faculty of Environmental Sustainability and Climatology at the ÍøÆسԹÏ, Doctor of Sciences Sagynbek Orunbaev, in collaboration with the University of Kentucky and national partners, presented the results of the study “Assessment of Springs as Water Supply Sources for Rural Areas of the Fergana Valley in Southwestern Kyrgyzstan†at the annual conference of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), held in New Orleans, USA.
As part of the project, the reliability, quality, and hydrogeochemical characteristics of springs in Batken Region were assessed. This region is highly dependent on irrigated agriculture and is particularly vulnerable to climate change. Field measurements, water sampling, and surveys of local residents showed that most springs meet international water quality standards and are fed by karst aquifers, making them an important local water resource.
The findings provide a foundation for further research aimed at identifying spring recharge areas, improving water resources management, and strengthening water security in rural areas through science-based decision-making and collaboration with stakeholders.
